Dear Colleague:

The International Endotoxin Society is pleased to invite you to attend its 8th Conference, November 15-18, 2004, in Kyoto, Japan. As you may remember, the 4th Conference of the IES was held in Nagoya, Japan in 1996. I am honored and proud to announce that the 8th Conference of the IES will be held yet again in Japan.

The discovery of endotoxin dates back to the late 19th century. Endotoxin was first characterized as a heat-stable and cell associated bacterial toxin. Endotoxin exerts strong pathophysiological, as well as physiological effects and is the most important virulence factor in Gram-negative bacterial infections. It was further demonstrated that certain humoral host factors including LPS-binding protein (LBP) interact with LPS, and that CD14 on cell surfaces recognizes lipid A or LPS. Recently, the discovery of toll-like receptors (TLR), especially TLR-4, as the specific receptor for endotoxin has have a great impact on endotoxin research and have further prompted very detailed studies designed to define LPS-specific signal pathway, intracellular regulation, and specific responses. Now, this is the most fascinating field in endotoxin research. These studies may provide a framework for a more rational design of clinical trials. We can be certain that the next decade of endotoxin research will prove to be as exciting as the last. We would like to invite you to join the IES and share with us the excitement of tomorrow's discoveries in endotoxin research.

The main theme of the 8th Conference is "Endotoxin and Beyond: Basic and Clinical Advances in Innate Immunity. " The objective of the conference is to provide an open forum for the exchange of ideas, results and experiences, and to promote basic and clinical endotoxin research. Anyone and everyone interested in this field is welcome to participate in the conference. We also hope that participants will take this opportunity to discover and enjoy the scenic autumn of Kyoto and Japan. Journey into Japan's past and touch the future of endotoxin research with the IES.

With highest regards,

Takashi Yokochi, M.D.
President of the IES

Dear Colleague:

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to participate in the 8th Conference of the International Endotoxin Society to be held over the period of 15-18 November 2004 at the Kyoto International Conference Hall (KICH) in Kyoto, Japan.

The Conference is expected to bring together over 400 participants from all over the world. In addition to the interesting scientific programs planned for Endotoxin 2004, I would like you to enjoy the venue city, Kyoto. Traditionally, as a cultural, academic, and industrial hub, the ancient capital of Kyoto led the rest of Japan.

Kyoto is rich in cultural assets cultivated in the course of its long history. Next to the thousand-year old temples filled with Buddhist statues are modern universities and technology. Events and industries characterized by its traditions and time-honored heritages are also abundant.

Natural scenery is another attractive feature of Kyoto, especially in autumn. The autumn tints surrounding the city will leave lasting impressions on your mind.

I expect the Conference will be both academically and socially beneficial to you and I sincerely look forward to your presence in Kyoto next year.

With highest regards,

Toshikazu Yoshikawa, M.D.
